Passionate, lyrical singer/songwriter with a razor's edge
**********
Julia Brown writes haunting singer-songwriter pop that is lyrically evocative and musically gripping, yet subtle and intimate—with bold melodies and penetrating vocals that have a feel that is at once otherworldly and familiar. Her songs are striking in their depth of emotion and seemingly unlimited musical vocabulary, and her lyrics tell each story perfectly, rendering every raw emotion and broken promise in vivid detail and placing the listener right up there on the tightrope with her, begging her not to slip and fall.
Her latest album Strange Scars was co-produced by legendary drummer, producer and founder of The Golden Palominos, Anton Fier and Chris Stamey of the DB's, and features performances by guitarist Knox Chandler (Psychedelic Furs, Depeche Mode), violinist Jacob Lawson (Sixpence None The Richer), bassist Rob Jost (Imogen Heap) and keyboardist/string arranger Irwin Fisch (Joe Henry, Sophie B. Hawkins). The album is mastered by Scott Hull (Steely Dan, David Bowie).
Some Comments:
"Tapestry-style singer-songwriter rock, Kate Bush-like art pop, Beck-esque sampledelic whimsy, Elvis Costello's slippery vocal melodies and elastic sense of song structure, Jill Scott's 'try-anything-once' spirit and the emotional intensity of Aimee Mann..." - Stewart Mason, Amplifier Magazine
